Grok AI Review 2026: Features, Pros, Cons, and Alternatives

Grok, the creation of eccentric billionaire Elon Musk, has progressed dramatically since its launch in late 2023. The AI chatbot distinguishes out for its capacity to search X posts, the incorporation of NSFW content, and virtual companions, among other capabilities that competitors do not provide. More importantly, Grok AI works well on most tasks, from file processing to web searches. However, it is more expensive than competitors, may perform better on research assignments, and offers mediocre image and video production tools.

Grok is worth a try if you enjoy the notion of creating NSFW stuff or conversing with an anime character, but ChatGPT remains our Editors’ Choice winner in the category due to its superior response accuracy and quality.

Grok is xAI’s chatbot. As with ChatGPT and Gemini, it allows you to converse via text or voice. However, you can also perform unusual things, such as automate activities or romance an anime character.

Grok, like most chatbots, may assist you with coding. Some of the benchmarks X gives for Grok 4 indicate that it is highly capable of the task. However, this feature is outside the scope of this review; you can try Grok AI coding skills for yourself.

I often utilize AI chatbots to answer inquiries and conduct research. Depending on what you need to know, it may be quicker and easier to simply ask Grok rather than browsing through forum threads or search results. Deep research talents can also serve as a strong foundation for learning about more complex topics, but more on that later.

How Does Grok Work?

Grok, at its most basic level, accepts prompts, puts them through an algorithm, and produces results. Grok’s basis is built on large language models (LLMs), which are artificial neural networks trained on vast datasets behind the scenes. These models provide Grok with the computational power to analyze and answer queries ranging from how to effectively assess the quality of an aglet to how to properly can vegetables. Grok may also use the internet to find knowledge about current events.

Is Grok Biased?

If you’ve heard of Grok, you’ve most likely heard about its inflammatory comments applauding Hitler and fixation with white genocide in South Africa. Furthermore, Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of xAI, is a well-known supporter and fundraiser to Donald Trump. So, does Grok have right-wing programming or shares the views of its creator? Where Is Grok Available?

Grok is available both on the web and as mobile apps (Android and iOS). Grok currently does not offer a desktop program or an official browser extension (although numerous unofficial ones are available for download).

Other services and websites employ Grok’s models, such as Perplexity, but X does not design, maintain, or own these versions, so they are not included in Grok’s official package. Grok, as expected, can be found all throughout X and queried directly. Reddit has similar functions. Still, if you want to sample Grok and get the complete experience, I recommend sticking with the dedicated applications and website.

Ease of Use and Interface: Get Going Without Hassle

Grok is free to use, with or without an account, however I recommend signing up. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on important features like chat history, file processing, voice chat, and more. Signing in sends you to Grok’s dashboard, which looks like that of other chatbots: A center text area allows you to start conversing to Grok, while buttons below it offer questions you can ask and allow you to select a Persona. The left sidebar provides access to your chat history, files, projects, tasks, and voice chats.

Voice Chat: Not the Most Lifelike

Grok does not have text-to-speech functionality, but it does include a voice chat mode. Voice chat is available on both Grok’s apps and the web, which is convenient, and paying for Grok grants you priority access to voice chat.

Web Search: Competent Responses, Unexceptional Sourcing

Grok, like any other modern chatbot, can perform web searches. Grok (Grok 4), ChatGPT (GPT-5), and Gemini (2.5 Flash) all responded quickly to most questions, such as what people thought of the Battlefield 6 beta, what was going on with Donald Trump and the Washington DC police, and what the latest developments in the Israel-Palestine conflict were. However, chatbots’ web search abilities are limited. No one could tell me what Warframe’s weekly Incarnon weapon rotation was at the time of writing.
